March! Spring is Coming.

March 2022 and spring is on the way. With that comes a broadening of pandemic era socialization (and I am cognizant of a darker issue coming out of Europe right now) and an opening of social events in general as well as some plans to get back to the game of reenactment.

Of course, please move forward with the caution you need to be responsible for your own health and comfort. I NEVER want to be the one pushing people out of their own comfort zones just as I don't want others pushing me out of my own. I was in the military, the time when my own body was not mine is way past. Further, I want to be known as one that is helpful.

I listen to the podcast How 2 Medieval and they did a great episode last month on burning out and from the perspective of 2022. We just spent 2 years not doing much and, this year, we may be back in the game. This after many of our groups have had some pretty major changes and many of us have changed as well - weal or woe we have all changed.

Take that into consideration as you dive into 2022. Be respectful and be helpful. Don't over do it though and take care of yourself. You are not helping anyone out of you are sacrificing yourself for nothing.

My least favorite part of a weekend immersion event - setting up after driving 3 hours to get there.

Stay hydrated and wear sunscreen. Seriously. We've all heard this over and over again and when we were young it was easier but many of us have gotten older and hydration and sunscreen make a difference. Timberhaven has learned this the hard way.

Take breaks when you are demoing to the public, have shifts and break each other out. It can get exhausting telling how hnefltafl works for the 100th time in 6 hours.

Rollo's River Camp.

Now is the time to take stock of your kit and gear and displays. Have you seen your spindle whorl or arrows since last fall? Organize now so you don't stress out the day before the demonstration or event.

Stretch out and get some steps in. It's good for you whether you are athletic or not. Take stock of your knees and back and make sure you've got what you need to support your aches and pains.

Have fun! Enjoy yourself and take time for yourself while immersed if you can. Create that moment for yourself and don't be ashamed to take a selfie.
