To start the new year I've decided to just post up some dumb pics I took of myself while out camping alone last summer 2021. I was testing out my new tent, some new clothing, and some new loot. Made a morning of it while camping at Stubb Stuart.
First - I will not be getting much new stuff in 2022 save for some chests I plan to make on my own. I really invested in my kit 2020 and 2021. 2022 (and the few years after that) will be paying off a new car note. My truck got stolen, Portland is #1 in car thefts for 2021 and I'm one of those in that stat, and I had to replace it. So I did and I had to go into debt I was not planning for. It is what it is and I got a nice vehicle to replace my old truck. I was rather fond of that truck and it was recovered 2 weeks later and it was a goner.
| Goodbye Old Lady, Grey Iron Steed. This was her last trip in September to NWVA Althing 2021. BTW, if you see those plates they are stolen. Right after this trip I got new tags too. |
I also took time off from work the weeks of Xmas and NYE. That's my usual move every year but I did not do it last year and I had to use up PTO to not lose it coming into 2022. I decided to take off all social media as well and I had plans but my time off became "holy smokes... I don't have a car!" on top of holidays and dental visits. Not much of a vacation.
This photo series was taken with my iPhone on a tripod and with a remote clicker. I'm not a professional at all.

My "Leeds Cap" or pillbox cap is a little wonky. My first time making one of these. It got a bit... poofy? ... at the top seam and makes a comb of some kind. I think it looks cool and jaunty but it does offend other reenactors. I wear it differently now but this is how I wore it for the photo shoot (again, I was alone) July 2021.
Yes, that is a Kupilka cup. Love them for camping, I do not use it for public demos. It's even full of black coffee.

I'm wearing my Viborg shirt. I love it and have many opinions on what the shirt is good at. I find it very comfortable and sturdy. I've fought in it and I've worked in it. For me the double layer of linen on the torso creates both good cover and an excellent cooling affect when soaked in sweat. The inner layers is wet and cools while the outer layer stays dry but allows controlled ventilation so as to not be too cooling. Is this the reason for the engineering of the original? I have no idea but that is my current result in my archeological experimentation. The cut and fit, customized for me by Elena D of LifeInHistory on Etsy out of Russia, is perfect for active movement. I am not the size of the original find so I will not attempt to say that this shirt was designed for activity but mine sure works in that aspect.
The pouch is rather fancy for what I impress. I have read and searched a lot for a fancy pouch like this in a Danish context and I did find one article about a find for a bronze fitting that matches the centerpiece of this pouch. The surrounding pieces are replicas of Birka finds and the pouch itself is also based off a Birka. Not my region, I know.
The arm ring on my left wrist is actual silver. I wear silver, I display hordes in shiny pewter. Around my neck is a leather thong with a silver crucifix pendant - Rollo is a Christian man of some wealth and reputation! The ring is my modern wedding ring.
I hope you enjoyed this week's post. Happy new year and stay healthy and keep your head up and your hands busy.
