Lord on a Beach: Photos

Took a road trip with my wife last week and on top of having a nice little vacation I was able to get some good photos of myself in some of my nicer kit... or my wife took great photos of me with an iPhone is more like it.

Big point - I'm not a model. I'm actually very unphotogenic. I tend to get slouchy naturally, don't know what to do with my hands, never smile, look like I'm a doof when I am trying to pose, all that stuff. Also I'm a fat guy and people tend to hate and judge fat people and I am very cognizant of that. At least I am male so I get less hate that women.

I also don't ever pose in martial gear. Just a thing I have chosen to do for a few reasons that is a discussion for a different post.

My wife is both a photographer by hobby and is a Lolita so having photos taken is in her wheelhouse. She told me how to stand, where to aim my chin, and put my hands. She did a good job.

What I was envisioning was an outfit inspired by the Mammen grave but less "rich" in status. Maybe a higher middle-status or a lower high-status outfit. I already had all this clothing that I had collected over the years and this was the first time I put it together in this combo.

Looking right...

... then I looked left.

Red wool tunic, white linen undershirt. Tunic square neckline is trimmed in a green, white, and silver card-weave (a design based off finds in Birka). Trim is 2.5 cm wide. 2 side gores fill out the hem and skirt area.

Red wool rectangle cloak; pretty standard. It is closed with a bronze straight pin and ring; also pretty standard but the bronze makes it pretty fancy. There is  a tie-off made of  <1cm brown and white card weave on the pin's ring.

Belt and pouch (which was flipped around and neither my wife or I noticed) have bronze pieces on it based off both Jelling and Mammen style work which both fit into my own era of mid 10th century. Unseen is my small silver crucifix and red beads (Ribe beads) around my neck - Fat-Rollo has done some great deals with the Church in Ribe for sure and they favor him! The crucifix is of the style of a round coin with wedges cut out to make it a cross.

These darn trees! My axe will sing!!

No singing axe... let's see what's on the beach.

Blue wool hose are some pretty standard medieval hose not of any early Scandi provenance. I have them tied off to a small belt worn under the tunic. They look a bit loose but:
a. They are new and this is the second time I've worn them in the year I have had them.
b. I have lost some weight since I bought them.
I will give them a wash and dry in warm water and air and that should tighten them up some.

Shoes are my second pair or Vlaardingen style I have bought from Boots by Bohemond.

Hwaet! Ships!!

Oh, wait. I know those guys.

The main interpretation of the Mammen grave clothing.
